The January 2026 edition of the ECOSOC Newsletter marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and highlights the start of the Council’s 2026 session. Held under the theme “Transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals for a sustainable future for all,” the session provides an opportunity to celebrate ECOSOC’s legacy.

Led by the President of ECOSOC, H.E. Mr. Lok Bahadur Thapa, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations, the Council’s work in 2026 will focus on key priorities, including transforming agrifood systems, advancing digital inclusion and youth entrepreneurship, strengthening climate action and resilience, and mobilizing financing for development.

Through its various segments, forums and meetings, as well as the work of its functional commissions and expert bodies, ECOSOC will seek to advance the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, and contribute to key intergovernmental  processes in 2026, including the World Urban Forum and the UN Water Conference, and follow-up to the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development and the Second World Summit for Social Development.
