Symposium Summary, available here

The DCF Argentina High-level Symposium took place in Buenos Aires on 6-8 September 2017, as the first preparatory symposium for the 2018 Development Cooperation Forum and as a key milestone in the run up to BAPA+40.

Nearly forty years since the historic UN Conference on Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries of 1978 in Buenos Aires, South-South cooperation has become an effective modality for the exchange of capacity building, technology and know-how among developing countries. Both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda welcome the increased contribution of South-South cooperation to poverty eradication and sustainable development.

South-South cooperation, also in partnership with other stakeholders, has the potential to foster trade, strengthen bilateral and regional ties, as well as become an effective way of mobilizing resources.

South-South and triangular cooperation continue to expand and evolve. They are flourishing at different levels, involving a multiplicity of actors. The symposium will bring together policymakers and development experts representing the diversity of stakeholders to advance South-South and triangular cooperation in the SDG era.

OBJECTIVES

  • Explore the challenges and opportunities faced by South-South and triangular cooperation, 40 years after the Buenos Aires Plan of Action.
  • Identify distinctive elements of South-South and triangular cooperation that may contribute to the implementation of the SDGs, based on experience and best practices.
  • Build the evidence base, in terms of distinctive approaches, contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals and to the overall picture on means of implementation.
  • Advance multi-stakeholder knowledge sharing and mutual learning to get better results on the ground.
