WHAT?
The Humanitarian Affairs Segment (HAS) provides a unique opportunity for Member States to address challenges, operational and normative progress on the humanitarian policy agenda. This year's HAS took place from 17 – 19 June in Geneva and focused on "the future of humanitarian affairs: towards greater inclusiveness, coordination, interoperability and effectiveness". The HAS included two main high-level panel discussions on: a) Addressing Capacity and Resource Challenges through Humanitarian Financing; b) Protecting Civilians by Upholding International Humanitarian Law. The annual, informal ECOSOC event on the transition from relief to development also represented an important opportunity to discuss the issue of transition. The event focused on ‘Supporting the transition from relief to development: Promoting recovery and resilience’. More specifically, since 1998, the HAS has become an essential platform for discussing the activities and issues related to strengthening the coordination of the humanitarian assistance of the United Nations.
WHO?
The Humanitarian Affairs Segment (HAS) enables Member States to engage with the United Nations and non-United Nations humanitarian and development community, the private sector, affected people and other actors from a range of geographic groups on current humanitarian challenges.
Official Meetings and Other Events
The meeting featured various interactive panel discussions and dialogues. In the margins, some 23 side-events provided participants with up-to-date information on current humanitarian issues, opportunities and challenges as highlighted by humanitarian and other counterparts, as well as by Member States, private sector and the civil society. For the third time, a trade fair was organized, which provided insight into what it feels to live and/or work in humanitarian settings, through the display of equipment and material used in the field, as well as visual projects showcasing the reality of humanitarian action.
