Objective
As we approach the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development and the Second World Summit on Social Development in 2025, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the Second Committee of the 79th General Assembly are organizing a joint meeting on 15 October from 10 am to 1 pm.
This meeting aims to explore strategies to build more sustainable, resilient, and shock-resistant societies during these challenging times. Key focus areas will include investments in gender-responsive social protection systems, early warning systems, disaster risk reduction, preparedness, and resilient recovery.
In the face of ongoing crises—including the impacts of COVID-19, escalating conflicts and geopolitical tensions, more frequent and intense disasters, and the rapid acceleration of climate change effects—societies are also grappling with increasing inequalities, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Women and girls, young people, and marginalized communities are disproportionately affected. By investing in social protection systems, adaptation, and resilience, countries can mitigate immediate and future risks, fostering inclusive growth that benefits all segments of society.
Format and Participation
The Second Committee Chair and the Economic and Social Council President will deliver brief opening remarks. This will be followed by two expert panels, addressing resilience and gender-responsive social protection strategies. These panels will feature a diverse group of experts, government representatives, UN system entities, and civil society members.
After the two panels, the floor will be opened for interventions from Member States, for an interactive dialogue. The meeting will conclude with closing remarks from the Chair of the Second Committee and the President of ECOSOC.
Outcome
The outcome of the joint meeting will be an informal summary by the President of ECOSOC and Chair of the Second Committee highlighting the key messages, ideas, and innovative policies discussed during the event.
