WHAT?
The 2021 Integration Segment of ECOSOC, chaired by His Excellency Ambassador Juan Sandoval Mendiolea, Vice-President of ECOSOC (Mexico), will discuss the combined UN system’s analysis and policy proposals on the 2021 theme of ECOSOC and HLPF on “Sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that promotes the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development: building an inclusive and effective path for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda in the context of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development".
As part of the preparatory process of the Integration Segment, the Vice-President of ECOSOC will organize three informal virtual conversations or “Integration Dialogues”. These dialogues will provide an opportunity to identify the key policy options to inform the deliberations at the Segment, and critical guidance on integration issues that need to be addressed. They will focus on the most creative ideas emanating from the work of ECOSOC subsidiary bodies and the UN system to break new ground in the reflection on how to recover better from COVID-19.
The Segment and the dialogues will be organized around three panel discussions:
- Institutional strengthening, governance, inclusion and the rule of law;
- Building back better towards inclusive, sustainable, and just economies for recovery: Re-designing the contract between people and planet; and
- Human well-being and capabilities: Building back more resilient, healthy, equitable and sustainable societies.
WHEN?
In line with the redefined mandate of the Integration Segment (A/RES/72/305), the 2021 Integration Segment will be held immediately before the high-level political forum (HLPF) on 2 July 2021. The three Integration Dialogues will be held on 27 May, 3 June and 10 June 2021, respectively. All three dialogues will take place from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. NY time.
HOW?
The 2021 ECOSOC Integration Segment will bring together the key messages from the subsidiary bodies of the Council and the UN system on the 2021 theme of ECOSOC and HLPF. The Segment will highlight innovative integrated policy solutions for COVID-19 response and building back better to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The outcome of the Segment will be a summary by the Vice-President of ECOSOC, highlighting the main policy recommendations and providing policy guidance on the ECOSOC and HLPF theme. The ECOSOC Vice-President (Mexico) will share key messages emanating from the Segment at the High-level Political Forum on 6 July.
