Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing our world. It alters weather patterns and increases the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events and, by exacerbating well documented drivers of conflicts, can raise the risk of social tension and unrest and undermine efforts to build and sustain peace.  Africa’s Sahel region, which has been affected by extreme climate conditions, is one of the world’s regions where the multifaceted challenges to peace, stability and development, including the impact of climate change, are most evident.  Against this backdrop, the Joint Meeting of the Economic and Social Council and the Peacebuilding Commission will discuss the linkages between climate change and challenges to peacebuilding and sustaining peace in the Sahel to explore ways to develop and implement effective conflict-sensitive mitigation and adaptation measures. It will also discuss how to enhance the coherence of the United Nations system’s support to the countries in the Sahel region to strengthen their resilience to climate change.
