Development cooperation in the post-2015 era…

Preparations for a global post-2015 development agenda are underway. A shared understanding has emerged that the agenda should go beyond the focus of the MDGs. It should also help put the world on a more sustainable development path. This will have implications for the future role and expectations of international development cooperation.

…with high demands for accountability and effectiveness

There is a recognized need to enhance the effectiveness and accountability of development cooperation. This includes special attention to achieving lasting development results. A range of measures to maximize the quality, effectiveness and impact of development cooperation are currently in place. Shortfalls remain. Yet, this wealth of experience can provide lessons for the post-2015 development agenda. It can also guide the design of a global accountability framework to support implementation of commitments under a renewed global partnership for development.

Furthering this discussion at the Germany High-Level Symposium…

The Germany High-Level Symposium was a preparatory meeting for the 2014 Development Cooperation Forum. It built on conclusions from preceding symposia in Ethiopia and Switzerland. It enabled an  open and interactive dialogue with high-level representatives from developing and developed countries, Southern partners, civil society, philanthropic foundations, the private sector, parliamentarians, local governments and international organizations,

Focus and expected outcomes

The Symposium examined key concepts of accountability and quality and effectiveness in development cooperation. It focused specifically on how these concepts could be usefully featured in the design and implementation of the post-2015 development agenda. It further explored how to engage the increasingly diverse group of development actors in a renewed global partnership for development, in a more coherent, effective and legitimate manner.

Preparing for the symposium

In preparation for the DCF Germany Symposium, a side event was held on 25 September 2013, alongside the Special Event of the President of the General Assembly on MDG follow-up.The side event will be a first step in exploring effectiveness and enhanced accountability in the post-2015 development agenda, drawing on the lessons learned from the experience with the Millennium Development Goals. Conclusions from the panel discussion and interactive dialogue at the side event will help set the substantive agenda for the Symposium.
