2007 GENERAL SEGMENT

The ECOSOC General Segment took place on 19 - 26 July 2007. It was the venue for the management and oversight function of ECOSOC. ECOSOC adopted decisions on a range of recommendations contained in part I of the report of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (E/2007/32), and decided to grant consultative status to 89 non-governmental organizations. The Council decided after the voting, to grant consultative status to “Coalition gaie et lesbienne du Québec“and “Swedish federation for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trangender rights“. ECOSOC adopted by consensus a decision to withdraw the consultative status of Liberal International for one year.

The Council took action on draft resolutions submitted to it by its functional commissions (Statistical Commission; Commission on Population and Development; Commission for Social Development; Commission on the Status of Women; Commission on Narcotic Drugs; Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice; Commission on Science and Technology for Development; Commission on Sustainable Development; United Nations Forum on Forests).

ECOSOC decided to extend the mandates of the Ad Hoc Advisory Groups (, ) until its substantive session in July 2008.

It considered and adopted texts on the reports of other UN entities working in the development field, among them UNAIDS and UN-Habitat. Considering regional cooperation issues, the Council adopted two resolutions, on the review of the intergovernmental machinery of the Economic Commission for Africa and on the admission of the Republic of Korea as a Member State of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.

ECOSOC adopted a resolution on the economic and social repercussions of the Israeli occupation on the living conditions of the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan, in which it called for the lifting of the severe restrictions imposed on the Palestinian people to alleviate the desperate humanitarian situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The Council took up issues on international cooperation in the field of informatics and science and technology for development, and adopted decisions on the flow of information for the follow-up to the World Summit on the Information Society.

ECOSOC considered the issue of mainstreaming a gender perspective into all policies and programmes in the United Nations system.

It considered and adopted a text on the review and coordination of the implementation of the Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2001-2010.
