The Economic and Social Council convened a Special Meeting on the impacts of the 2015/16 El Niño phenomenon at the request of the General Assembly (A/RES/70/110) on 6 May 2016. The meeting provided an opportunity to receive an update on the current El Niño and its economic, social and environmental dimensions, and to discuss measures undertaken by countries to increase their resilience. The meeting was organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
