WHAT?

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) organized a Joint Meeting on the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Sustaining Peace” on Friday, 24 June 2016 from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. The meeting was chaired by His Excellency Mr. Oh Joon, President of ECOSOC and His Excellency Mr. Macharia Kamau, Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission.

WHY?

The joint meeting provided an opportunity to explore the links between the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and sustaining peace, particularly as it relates to globally agreed targets for the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies, providing access to justice and the building of effective, accountable and inclusive institutions, as well as the drivers of conflict that pertain to the social, economic and environmental areas, including socio-economic inequalities, poor management of natural resources and lack of jobs. The challenges faced by the countries emerging from conflict require an integrated and coordinated approach by the United Nations system. The Council brought in the expertise of the ECOSOC system and its stakeholders to discuss the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in conflict-affected countries.

WHO?

The ECOSOC and PBC joint meeting brought together high-level representatives of UN Member States, civil society and the UN system.
