Public sentiment towards globalization appears to be undergoing a deep transformation. Increasingly across the globe, and across the political spectrum in many countries, growing scepticism of globalization threatens to undermine long-held commitments to open societies, as well as the potential  of multilateralism to manage global public goods, mediate international relations and facilitate collective solutions to global economic and political challenges. Many observers believe this trend may signal a retreat to protectionism and nationalism.

Given the importance of international cooperation and multilateral action for global prosperity and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the meeting was held jointly by the UN General Assembly's Second Committee and the Economic and Social Council, which consider this a key priority area of their ongoing work. The aim of the meeting was to discuss different perspectives and potential solutions interactively among external experts, Member States and other participants on these topics in order to advance viable pathways towards more inclusive globalization patterns.
