The Economic and Social Council convened a Special Meeting on “Response to Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe” on 2 April 2019 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Objectives
The meeting, organized by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), in collaboration with the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) aimed to inform Member States about the impact of Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. The meeting discussed how to support a well-coordinated response, focused on immediate humanitarian needs as well as sustainable and risk-informed medium and long-term recovery and reconstruction in the aftermath of the cyclone.
Participants
The meeting attracted high-level participation from Member States. Speakers include: the ECOSOC President, H.E. Ms. Inga Rhonda King, the Vice-President of ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment, H.E. Mr. Omal Hilale, the Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohammed, and the Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. Mark Lowcock, among others. Representatives of civil society also attended the meeting. A Presidential Statement was issued after the meeting.
